Environmental Instructor

Position Summary: The Environmental Instructor (EI) position is a seasonal, part-time position responsible for carrying out the educational mission of the Brandywine Valley Association (BVA) and Red Clay Valley Association (RCVA) through meaningful experiences with an emphasis on hands-on field activities that demonstrate the interconnectedness of living organisms and the watershed on which they rely. Student programs offered by BVA and RCVA range from age 3 through 15, with some adult classes. During the primary education season in the spring and fall, average hours for an EI range from 2 - 20 hours per week depending on the EI’s time commitment and experience level.

Position Reports To: Education Coordinator

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities including a minimum of 15 hours of program observation and/or team teaching before teaching a program alone.

  • Enthusiastically deliver a variety of well-researched environmental education programs while fulfilling the program goals and science standards outlined in any particular lesson plan.

  • Organize program supplies before and after scheduled programs in allotted preparation and cleanup time.

  • Willingness to learn new content and expand personal limitations.

  • Communicate programmatic or property needs with immediate supervisor or Education Director when necessary.

  • Arrive on time and prepared to teach.

  • Adhere to "BRC Core Competencies for Job Preformance:"

    • Flexibility

    • Conservation-minded

Position Qualifications:

  • Experience in science, natural history or education is preferred.

  • Effective management and oral communication skills.

  • Willingness to teach outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to hike terrain while carrying tools/supplies needed for programs

  • Flexibility to work effectively in a variety of situations, and with diverse groups and individuals in a team-based atmosphere.
