Third Thursdays

for Nature Enthusiasts

Get back to Nature with Family and Friends

                                                                                           

This new series of programs will run the third Thursday of every month and is designed exclusively for you, our members.  As a member of the Brandywine Valley Association you are entitled to invite your friends along, at the member price!  Most programs are geared toward teens and adults but some are appropriate for families with children over six.

The symbol indicates a Family Friendly Program!

         Children 12 years old and under are free and must be accompanied by an adult.

The cost is $5.00 for ages 13 to adult.

Members can invite guests at the member price!

 

Parking is on the office side of the property.

Meet at the Browning Barn.

 

Registration and payment are due the Monday prior to your program.  Call 610-793-1090.

 

October 16th, 2008 – Fall Tree Identification

6:30-8:00 PM

 

The best way to learn your trees is to go out with a field guide and someone who knows trees better than you!  Learn how to use a field guide, basic plant vocabulary and then use bark, twigs and leaves to help you identify the trees that display those spectacular fall colors.

 

November 20th – Natural Wreaths and Ornaments

6:30-8:30 PM

 

Prepare your home for the holiday season while spending time socializing with your neighbors.  You will go on a short walk to collect natural materials to supplement any supplies you would like to bring from home.  Also, you can bring your own glue gun, tacky glue, and any shapes, forms, grapevine wreaths or other items you would like to decorate.  Some natural materials, glue and demonstration projects will be provided.  

            

December 18th – Earth Friendly Gift Wrapping

6:30-8:00 PM

 

Last minute gift wrappers unite!  Are you upset by the amount of gift-related trash your family creates during the holidays?  Most commercial wrapping papers cannot be recycled, so learn how to decorate your gifts in recyclable and reusable materials.  Some supplies will be provided.  Bring your favorite fabrics and seasonal stamps along with a few unwrapped gifts!

 

 

January 15th, 2009 – Family Stargazing

7:30-9:00 PM

 

Do you know how to find the big dipper in the sky?  How about Polaris, our north star?  Join us for an evening of stargazing and some Greek and Roman mythology about the constellations.  Bring a blanket and a flashlight.  Hot cocoa will be provided!

February 19th – Climate Change and Renewables

6:00-7:30 PM

 

Chester County Citizens for Climate Protection (4CP) will lead a discussion on how climate change is affecting our watersheds.  Find out what changes we can expect and what actions we can take to reduce our impact.  This presentation and discussion will focus on greenhouse gas emissions, the problems associated with coal and the challenges of ramping up renewable power supplies.

 

March 19th – Maple Sugaring

5:30-7:00 PM

 

There’s a story within that bottle of sweet maple syrup that you pour over your pancakes and waffles.  Come learn the origin of maple syrup straight from the tap and see for yourself just how maple sap becomes a delicious sugary treat.

 

 

 

April 16th – Spring Greening

6:00-7:30 PM

 

Time for Spring Cleaning?  How about Spring Greening your house this year!  Learn simple tips for maintaining a healthy, eco-friendly home.  Come prepared to open your mind to new ideas, and ready to open your home to a more sustainable, biodegradable and natural way to live.

  


 

May 21st – Family Fishing Night

5:30 PM to Dusk

 

We’ll caravan from the Myrick Center to a nearby pond for a fun-filled evening of fishing.  Basic instruction will be provided.  All experience levels are welcome. Equipment and bait will be furnished, or bring your own.
