Dear BVA Member: In 2002 the accent remained on growth for the Brandywine Valley Association. The Board of Directors and staff continued to focus on the directions the Association should take in the immediate future and in the years to come. BVA’s Board of Directors and staff attended a Saturday retreat in the fall to discuss the organization’s strengths and weaknesses and the critical roles as educator, advocate and steward that BVA plays in the watershed. The outgrowth of that brainstorming session was the formation of a strategic planning committee to inventory current organizational assets and to chart a path for the future. BVA’s environmental education programs continued to grow in leaps and bounds in 2002. Summer camp drew its largest registration ever, serving over 400 children in new, expanded and repeat programs. As part of BVA’s Youth Agriculture Program, elementary, middle and high school students, as well as volunteer individuals and families from the community, planted and harvested a variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers in the Myrick Center’s one-acre organic garden. Approximately 1,300 pounds -- over 90 percent of the garden’s yield -- were donated to the Kennett Food Cupboard. In addition, a number of the garden’s bounty received ribbons at the Goshen Country Fair and the Unionville Community Fair. The groundwork for a formal Volunteer Program was completed in 2002 as well. After a number of meetings, the Volunteer Committee produced a manual of guidelines and expectations to be used for newly recruited volunteers. The manual was unveiled at a Volunteer Appreciation Social, held in early December to recognize all current individuals who give of their time and talents for BVA. The momentum of 2002 will continue in the coming year, as BVA moves forward in 2003. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to those whose leadership, foresight and hard work have paved the way for this much-needed growth to take place. And to our members, without whom we could not accomplish what we do year after year, a hearty thank you! Please read this annual report and share in the accomplishments of 2002. BVA could not have succeeded without you. Sincerely, |

Year In Review The year 2002 has been one of planning and laying the groundwork for growth for the Brandywine Valley Association (BVA). BVA’s work with community leaders intensified over the past year and will result in joint projects that will positively impact current and future generations. BVA’s education programs continued to grow, serving more students in 2002 than ever before. Plans are in the works to accommodate even more in the coming years. Meeting this growth will entail taking stock of current resources, such as staff and equipment, and planning accordingly. |
| Record Drought
Years of low rainfall and several serious droughts culminated in record-breaking low flows and ground water levels in our watershed in 2002. This state triggered an eleven-month drought emergency requiring households in the Brandywine Valley to take measures to conserve water in their daily routines. It is hoped that much of what was mandated will become second nature to valley residents and practiced in non-drought situations as well. Public Outreach BVA’s successful Local Issues series was expanded in 2002 to include Downingtown area municipalities and the City of Wilmington, while the West Chester venue was continued. In addition, BVA’s voice was heard regularly in the electronic and print media. BVA’s Executive Director gave bi-weekly updates on the watershed’s drought emergency on WCHE-AM and wrote a monthly column, titled Watermarks, in the Kennett Paper. The 2002 Brandywine Clean Up attracted over 150 volunteers, who saw less trash and tires in the Brandywine Creek than in past years, indicating the positive impact this annual event has in the valley. Productive Alliances BVA’s partnerships have resulted in productive outcomes for the watershed. In 2002 the Association continued to host the Christina Task Force meetings and played a vital role in the crafting of the Chester County Watersheds Plan, adopted in September. BVA completed a draft of the Rivers Conservation Plan currently under review with DCNR. In 2002, BVA began working with the City of Wilmington to develop a comprehensive long-range plan for addressing non-point source problems in the watershed. BVA held its Annual Meeting at Stroud Water Research Center underscoring the cooperation between the two organizations.

Myrick
Conservation Center
Much attention was given to BVA’s 314-acre Center in 2002. Under the aegis of the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program warm season grasses and stream coridor plantings were installed on seven acres, while, according to the Center’s Master Plan, invasives were removed from hedgerows and forest perimeters throughout the property. The Center’s organic garden program drew students from Unionville School District’s Patton Middle School and Unionville High School, as well as community volunteers of all ages. The Center also provided the opportunity for three Eagle Scout projects to be undertaken and successfully completed. Environmental EducationBVA’s education programs continued to grow in 2002 with approximately 11,000 students served at the Myrick Conservation Center. The Watershed Learning Center (WLC) Program continued at six schools in Pennsylvania and Delaware, including expansion to Penn Wood Elementary School in West Chester, PA. Additional schools in the watershed have expressed interest in starting WLC programs. In conjunction with the WLC Program, BVA launched the Watershed School Program for current teachers and education majors from West Chester University and Neumann College to provide instruction on how to utilize a hands-on, field approach to teach environmental concepts. Dawn Lawless of the Coatesville School District received the 2002 Teacher of the Year Award and Kris Gannon, a veteran BVA Guide, received the 2002 Environmental Instructor of the Year Award. BVA’s Youth Agriculture Program received several grants in 2002 to expand the Myrick Center garden area and accommodate the increasing number of students who wish to be a part of the program. The garden won a number of ribbons at community fairs for its vegetables and flowers. BVA used the Saalbach Farm property in 2002 to train instructors on wetlands and stream studies programs, with plans to further expand programming on that site in 2003.

Saalbach Farm
The year 2002 saw completion of a constructed wetlands for use as a septic treatment system for houses on the property, while tackling regular maintenance projects on the 225-acre property. Twenty-five acres of warm season grasses and twenty-six acres of stream corridor plantings were installed under the Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program. Storm Water Management BVA has helped watershed leaders identify storm water and its management as a priority issue and to incorporate directives regarding this area in the Watersheds Plan and Brandywine Rivers Conservation Plan. The Association has featured methods of recharging storm water at its Local Issues meetings, while stressing the use of the ground water model as a tool to illustrate how to design optimal ground water recharge systems. Surface Water Quality BVA was visible throughout 2002 in our work with other public and private conservation groups to submit a Christina Basin EPA watershed initiative application. The Association also worked with a discharger and its neighboring landowner to develop a plan for land application to remove an existing discharge from the stream, while providing opportunities for dischargers and regulators to dialogue about Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) requirements. Ground Water Management In 2002 BVA’s ground water model was utilized by area developers, municipal planners and other conservation organizations to optimize withdrawal and recharge locations in several major development sites in the valley. It also was given a prominent role in the Brandywine Rivers Conservation Plan, where its use will determine potential wellhead protection areas. |
